Luana's health & fitness journey

Posted: 10 May 2021

One of our very own gym members Luana has been kind enough to share her inspiring story of her amazing transformation.

What made you want to make the change?

In September last year I decided I needed to take my life back. I was sitting at around 107 - 112 kg – which I knew was super unhealthy.  I didn’t feel comfortable in my skin anymore, I was tired all the time and I knew that this was not the body I was meant to be in, so realised that I had to make a drastic change.  I had to make the change for myself and my amazing family – they were the 2 things that were driving me. I have an amazing husband and daughter who I want to be there to love and support for the long term.  So in September after multiple appointments, I decided to have weight loss surgery.  Now most of you will immediately think – 'oh that’s such a quick fix and a cop out'.  Well do I have news for you……..

What did you learn from your journey?

Its not an easy road – weight loss surgery is merely a tool to help you achieve your weight loss goals and you still need to work hard to get the results your looking for and need for a healthy body again.  Now having this tool I had to learn how to eat all over again, learn how to exercise better and overall make better choices for me and my body.  I also had to learn how to be focused on my goal and figure out the sacrifices that needed to be made for me to achieve 60 kg on the scales.

What changes did you have to make?

So I totally changed my diet to only protein, veggies, fruit and I eat as natural as I can – yes I still have coffee and wine and maybe cheat with a keto peanut butter cup from the café from time to time because I'm human.  I've had to eliminate bread, pasta, soft drinks and processed sugars – as much as I love all these things they surely do not love me.  So now that my diet has been drastically changed, I had to work on my exercise plan.  I work out 3 to 4 times a week and with the amazing tips from Josh and the team at the gym downstairs – I figured out a plan to suit me.  I mix it up with a combo of Staff Classes, Boxing, Spin, Weights, Running, Rowing and Pilates.

What have been the benefits?

The benefit of all these drastic changes – I'm doing more with my family, I'm happier in my mind, I have more energy (who knew these legs could actually run) my body no longer feels broken and a bonus to it all I’m feeling like this is the skin I was meant to be in.   I wish I had made the sacrifice earlier in life – better late than never they say!

What was most challenging?

Both the food and exercise were super tough because I had to flip what I would normally do on its head and do the total opposite, socializing was also tough as I associated this with food and booze.

What were your inspirations throughout your journey?

My inspiration is life and my family.

How has this changed your life?

This choice has changed my life.  I've gone from 107-112kg to 60-63 kgs and I’ve had to get a whole new wardrobe (not complaining).  I love to exercise and I enjoy life so much more now.

What would be your message to others thinking about making some change's?

My message to anyone who is thinking about journey – do it for you!  Get your life back again. Don’t wait – start now.  And my message to those on a similar journey – don’t stop, keep at it, hit those goals. You can achieve anything.

A big thankyou to fabulous Luana for sharing her story.
